The common view of Voodoo as a religion of evil hexes is just one of the misconceptions you'll throw out the window if you attend this fascinating Voodoo-Cemetery Walking Tour, put on by the Voodoo Museum.
This tour is not part of the Zydeco Trail Tour, but is being recommended as an optional side-trip while we are in New Orleans on our upcoming Festivals Acadiens et Creoles 2011 trip. The Museum's curator and founder himself will lead you on this tour to the oldest cemetary in the French Quarter and Congo Square. You'll learn about the connections between Voodoo and music* and about Marie Laveau, famed and highly respected Voodoo priestess of the 19th century. You may even get a chance to meet a contemporary Voodoo priestess!
So don't be left out in the dark not knowing what a gris-gris is all about. Find out on this optional tour! You can also visit the Voodoo

museum’s website: http://www.voodoomuseum.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7&Itemid=11
Tours run 2.5 to 3 hours and cost $19 per person.
Or, check out the New Orleans African American Museum at http://noaam.org/
The NOAAM is located in Treme, the oldest surviving black community in the United States and is dedicated to protecting, preserving, and promoting through education the history, art, and communities of African Americans in New Orleans and the African diaspora.
The Museum is housed in the beautiful Treme Villa, considered by some to be one of the finest examples of a Creole villa in the city. Built in 1828-29, the home retains many of its original decorative details. There are five restored buildings to visit.

* The Vodoo Walking Tour emphasizes the connection between Voodoo and music, especially in Congo Square. Two of the sound tracks they run in the museum are the Zydeco/Voodoo recordings; Zydeco GrisGris and Calinda. They also explain the connections with Voodoo and Jazz, Voodoo and Rock-n-Roll, and Voodoo and Mardi Gras. Did you know that Jelly Roll Morton, the "inventor" of jazz was a zombie?
